5 Ways to Prepare Your Yard for Spring

5 Ways to Prepare Your Yard for Spring

August, September and October are prime planting months for home gardeners in Adelaide. But as winter in South Australia comes to an end and spring begins, you can't just dive right into planting. Instead, you need to first make sure your yard is ready to foster whatever you want to plant, which often means a deep spring cleaning.

In the past, we've written about why you should clear out your yard and how a skip bin can make the process easier. In this blog, though, we'll explain how to prepare your yard for spring, including what you should clear out of your yard before planting, and explain how hiring a skip bin can help.

1. Remove Dead Branches and Plant Waste

Cool winter temperatures can take a toll on your plants, even perennial shrubs and deciduous trees. Late winter or early spring is the perfect time to remove dead or dying branches from trees, trim shrubs and prune roses. Doing so promotes healthy springtime growth and sets your yard up for success this summer.

Remove dead or dying branches to prevent property damage as well. On a warmer spring day early in the season, you might want to lean a ladder against the roof and remove any plant debris.

2. Clean Out Your Water Features

Does your yard have birdbaths, bee baths or even a small ornamental pond or two? Moss and scum are sure to have cropped up in your watering holes over the winter. Take the time to tip out any stagnant water from bird and bee baths and to scrub down your water features until they're shiny and new. You'll also want to skim any moss, leaves, algae and winter debris from ponds or water gardens.

3. Deal With Outdoor Furniture

Hopefully, you brought your outdoor furniture inside over the cooler winter months. If not, though, make sure you take full stock of your chairs and tables as you set up your yard for spring. You might need to stain wooden furniture or dispose of it if the winter moisture took a hard toll.

4. Prepare for Planting

What do you hope to grow this summer? A delicious spread of fruits and vegetables, including asparagus, rockmelon, squash, rocket and peas? A colourful bed of flowers? New evergreen trees?

Whatever you want in your yard this year, spring is the time to organise the yard, decide where you want each plant to grow and begin preparing the soil for maximum growth.

Make sure to add these crucial gardening tasks to your list this spring:

  • Mulch the soil to add nutrients after a long winter.
  • Create raised beds for vegetables or flowers.
  • Move evergreens to new locations and plant new trees now; trees need to take hold earlier in the season before the summer heat sets in.
  • Get rid of weeds and dead grass to maximise space for new growth.
  • As soon as the grass starts to grow back in, mow the lawn to prevent weeds from growing or the grass for extending into planting areas.

Don't forget to invest in a good organic fertilizer. If you compost, you should have an excellent, healthy batch of compost ready to add to your garden.

5. Remove Yard Waste as Soon as Possible

Once you've trimmed your hedges, removed dead branches and zeroed in on rotted outdoor furniture, move the waste off your property so you can focus on planting.
