The Best Place for a Skip Bin on Your Property

The Best Place for a Skip Bin on Your Property

Once you know that you're going to hire a skip bin, your next decision needs to be just where you're going to put it. Where you place it will depend on the layout of your property and the size of the bin you plan to hire. You have a number of options available, and you'll need to choose the best one to meet your needs.

Option 1: On Your Driveway

Having the skip bin on your driveway is probably the most obvious choice. This is about the easiest spot for you to fill the bin, especially if you place the bin right in front of your garage.
Most driveways can comfortably accommodate a skip bin, but you also need to make sure that the delivery truck has enough space to do its job. In order for the delivery truck to safely drop off and collect the bin, your driveway needs to have a width of at least 2.7 metres. However, if your driveway isn't quite wide enough for the truck, you do have a few other options.

Option 2: On Your Lawn

If your front yard is unfenced and the truck doesn't need to back over your garden to drop the bin off, your lawn can be a great place for the skip bin.
Of course, an empty skip bin is heavy, and its weight is only going to increase once you start to load it. To avoid a large, rectangular patch of dead grass on the lawn, you'll need to put down some protection. This is as easy as finding a couple of sturdy beams of wood that the bin can be placed on top of.

Sure, the grass underneath these beams will be crushed (which is impossible to avoid), but these two narrow strips of damaged lawn will be much less obvious than a large rectangle of damaged grass from the entire weight of the loaded bin.

Placing the bin on wooden beams can also be a good idea if you want to put the bin on your driveway but are worried about the state of the pavement (especially if your driveway is already cracked).

Option 3: On the Street or Nature Strip Outside Your Home

You may just not have any space on your property for the skip bin. If this is the case, you will need to think about placing it on the street or nature strip outside your home. You'll need a permit for this, which is issued by your local council.

The regulations for allowing a skip bin to be deposited outside your home will vary depending on which city council's jurisdiction you live in, but the permit will need to be approved before the bin can be delivered.

The council will want to know a few things when you apply for a skip bin permit. These can include:

  • Exactly where the skip bin will be placed (which, in this case, is your address)
  • Whether you want to place the bin on the street or on the nature strip directly outside your home
  • The size of the bin
  • The length of time the bin will be there

The council might decline an application for a large skip bin but would approve it if you hired a smaller bin. This isn't always as inconvenient as it sounds, and you'd be surprised at how much you can fit into a bin if you load it efficiently.
